This American Flag was knitted by Lawrence Buol during his imprisonment
in Kunming, China, by the Chinese Communists from January 1950 to September
1955. He learned to knit from one of the CAT wives during a long layover
in Canton and used to annoy other pilots with his ball of yarn in the
cockpit. He also knitted himself a sweater during those five and a half
years; but had unravelled it to make a new one at the time he was
released. He acquired the yarn from clotheslines in the compound where he
was held. |
