Hitchman joined Air America in the early 1960's as a helicopter pilot. He flew in Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam, eventually becoming a senior pilot and trainer.  Hitchman was instrumental in evacuating refugees from outlying provinces and from Saigon 1975.
